Interactive session: I am valued – You are valued

In this task, students are prompted to discuss the meaning of human dignity and respectful treatment. To end, students tell each other how important they are.

Assignment:

The teacher explains the concept of human dignity:

There are many different kinds of people in the world. Everyone is important and valuable from the moment they are born. No one is better or worse than anyone else. This is called human dignity. Every individual – including every child – has the right to be treated well, even if they make a mistake.

Questions for the students:

  • What does being treated well involve? What about being treated badly?
  • How does it feel when you are treated well?
  • How does it feel when you are treated badly?
  • What makes you feel that you matter?
  • How can you show others that they matter, too?

Next, the students position themselves so that everyone can see one another. They can form a circle or stand along the classroom walls. When everyone can see each other, each student says one kind, safe and appreciative thing to the classmate on their right.

A ball or another object is used to indicate whose turn it is to speak. After praising their fellow student, the speaker passes the ball on to them, always to their right. The ball continues to be passed round in a logical order until everyone has both given and received praise.

The teacher can write or project the following examples on the board to help students think of compliments:

  • I like that you…
  • You are very good at…
  • The best thing about you is…
  • You are a good friend because…
  • I like spending time with you because…
