Assignment:
Students draw a cartoon in which the main character experiences either a sense of belonging or a sense of exclusion.
The cartoon may depict a particular situation, for example:
- a character who feels like an outsider is included in group activities
- a character realises that they are a member of a group and an important part of the community
- a character finds a new community, for example through a hobby
Students should be encouraged to reflect on what belonging or exclusion feels like and how these feelings could be depicted in a cartoon (e.g. through the characters’ facial expressions, actions and gestures).
The teacher can encourage students to think about the plot and illustrations for their cartoon by asking questions:
- In what situations do you feel like you belong?
- What does it feel like to belong? What does it feel like to be excluded?
- How can we ensure that no one is excluded?
